This song probably isn’t as known as “All About That Bass,” however, it still addresses the issue of body image.

“You & I” is a song off of John Legend’s album Love In the Future, which also includes the popular hit, “All of Me.”

If you haven’t seen the video yet, I highly recommend you watch it before you read any of this because it’s so touching and awesome and you’ll understand why I chose it. (:

This song, even though it is a love song, is also really empowering. The first couple lyrics are probably my favorite:

“You fix your makeup, just so // Guess you don’t know, that you’re beautiful// Try on every dress that you own // You were fine in my eyes a half hour ago // And if your mirror won’t make it any clearer I’ll be the one to let you know // Out of all of the girls // You’re my one and only girl // Ain’t nobody in the world tonight…”

This song just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside, probably because I’m a hopeless romantic, but I think it’s also a different way to look at body image, from the point of view of you’re partner. (:

“Try” is ALL about body image and I absolutely love it. I can’t even choose one part of the song I like the most because the whole song is just so empowering.

This song also has a great video, so I suggest you watch it before reading on as well! (:

I think the reason this song resonates with me so well is because it’s the first song that blatantly states that you don’t have to try so hard to fit in, you just wake up in the morning and be yourself. Of course this is easier said than done, but hopefully one day we’ll all be able to wake up in the morning and love ourselves, just the way we are.

Now I’m not saying change is bad, if you want to change, go for it! Just don’t do it because other people want you to, do it because YOU want to.

Body image is all about YOU. Whether you’re male, female, transgender, whatever…we all struggle with being comfortable in our own skin. These songs may be targeted more toward women, but we have to realize that men also struggle with having a positive body image. So whoever you are, whatever gender you are, remember Christina Aguilera’s hit, “You are beautiful, in every single way.”

Great article!!! I love all of the songs that you chose especially Try by Colbie Caillat it really does make it plain as day…we really dont have to try so hard. I’ve learned this over time and yes its still not a walk in the part in terms of wearing NO makeup everywhere. Its just who I am I love my makeup haha! But I love that song and more people need to hear it its amazing!!! I loved both parts of this article!!!!
